The suspension system is an essential part of a vehicle which includes springs, shock absorbers, control arms, bushings, sway bars, ball joints and struts. Their main purpose is to keep your tyres in contact with the road and carry loads, including passengers, safely. The "Stopping, Steering and Stability" capabilities of your vehicle are what we call the “safety triangle” and are dependent on the type and condition of your shock absorbers and suspension system...

The suspension and shock absorbers are not just there to give you a smooth ride, they are a very important part in the correct operation of these three critical capabilities.

Stopping – At 50km/h, just one worn shock absorber can increase your stopping distance by up to 2 metres. Worn control arm bushes, trailing arm bushes and sway bar bushes can also affect the efficiency of stopping your vehicle as they are all designed to improve your tyres contact with the road surface.

Steering – Worn shock absorbers and suspension bushings can cause your tyres to lose contact with the road. It can also effect the self centering ability and reduce turning ability when cornering thus dramatically affecting your steering.

Stability - Worn shock absorbers and bushings cause excessive sway and body roll around corners, making the car a lot less stable.

These worn components can also cause your tyres to wear excessively on the inner and outer edges and also unevenly wear your brake assemblies. You should therefore take care to look after your entire suspension system, in turn keeping you, your passengers and other road users safe, and also save you money from needing more regular tyre and brake replacements.
